While not as popular as the Mustang, the Corvette, or the GTO, the 2+2 played a featured role in the formation of the venture capital business model. Legend has it that a budding venture capitalist was pitching a prospective investor at Buck’s in Woodside. After a litany of questions from the LP, the VC, who was a muscle car aficionado, became mesmerized by this beautiful car in the parking lot. The LP asked a question, and the VC mumbled ‘2+2’ as he daydreamed about taking it for a drive. The LP pounded his fist on the table, startling the VC back into reality, and asked ‘what do you mean the comp model is 2+2? That doesn’t make any sense! Are you listening to me?’ The VC, who knew he had to dig himself out of a hole, replied ‘2+2 … you pay me 2% of the capital per year as a management fee, and you pay me $2 of every $10 of profit.’ Thus the 2+2 venture model, later simplified to 2+20 so that both numbers were expressed as percentages, was born.
