Warp gates are used by the Terran to travel quickly over very long distances. Warp gates are limited by the fact that you have to travel between warp gates, and so the Terran send un-crewed warp gates out to new star systems, sometimes taking thousands of years to reach the new system. Crew and ships are then sent through the warp gate to man it and colonize nearby planets.
